Epitalon Care MapWhat epitalon studies leave unanswered
Sleep question

Does epitalon help with sleep?

The night-work study tested urine for a substance left after the body breaks down melatonin, a chemical involved in sleep. It did not measure whether people slept better.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reviewed epitalon during July 2026. It found too little evidence to support it for insomnia, which means trouble sleeping.

What did the night-work study look at?

The study included women who mainly worked nights. Forty had low levels of a melatonin breakdown product in their urine.

Melatonin is a chemical the body produces that helps control sleep. A breakdown product is a substance left after the body processes it.

Those women were split between an epitalon spray and a placebo spray, which had no epitalon. The study lasted 20 days.

The amount of that melatonin breakdown product rose in the urine of women given epitalon. The study did not measure whether they slept better.

Does that mean the women slept better?

That was not measured. The FDA described the study as small and short, with no reported safety data.

The authors also described changes in how people felt, but did not explain how they assessed those changes.

A urine result cannot stand in for an answer about restful sleep.

Ask: did the study show that the women slept better, or only that their urine test result changed?

Was this a study of injections for insomnia?

No. The spray went under the tongue. The FDA found no human epitalon study for insomnia and no study of injections under the skin.

That leaves a gap between this study and an offer of injected epitalon for sleep.

How can I make a sleep visit useful?

Write down the part of sleep that is bothering you. Is it falling asleep, waking often, or feeling worn out the next day?

Bring that concern to the discussion. Ask about an assessment, other options, and what change would count as helping.
